How it Works
When a customer with a Bluetooth® enabled device enters the broadcasting range of an Interactive Media Solutions (IMS) unit he/she will receive messages. Here is how it works:
Step 1
The customer enters the broadcasting range of the IMS unit. The IMS unit asks for permission to interact asking if he/she wants to receive a message.
Behind the scenes:
Identification: The IMS unit identifies the handheld device based on its unique Bluetooth® ID number and captures it for storage. Like an IP address tag associated with a computer, this Bluetooth® identification number is permanently coded into the handheld device ─ it never changes. Queries: After the identification process, the IMS unit queries its database to see what, if any, communication may have taken place with the handheld device in the past. Depending on the result of the query, the system initiates action to deliver content to the handheld device based on a set of pre-programmed instructions.
Step 2
The customer agrees to receive the message and the IMS unit transmits it using Bluetooth® technology.
If a history for the handheld device exists in the database, the IMS unit follows a set of pre-programmed instructions to continue communicating with the device while building the profile. If there is no history of communication with the handheld device, the system will start profiling the handheld device by initiating communication based on a different set of pre-programmed instructions.
Step 3
The customer is enticed by the message sent and carries out the desired action.
