Canada’s Emergency Mobile Alert Network

Based on a review of a test message that was received by an individual, the alarm looked and sounded like a SAM alarm, but with a pop-up indication.  The pop-up style notification had only text and limited number of words.  Critically, either accidentally or intentionally deselecting the notification pop-up permanently removed the notice from the phone.  Meaning that the individual could not check the message to, for example, ensure that it had been read properly or to show it to others.  In SAM, notification data, with graphics, is retained within the phone's notification centre (Apple) and notification bar (Android) for later access.  Until a user gets rid of the message by swiping it away within either the notification centre/bar, it stays tucked away for user access.  Additionally, if users remove the message from the notification centre/bar, it will still be available with the SAM app itself.

On Wednesday May 9, test messaging of Canada's new emergency alert system continued in all provinces other than Ontario and Quebec.  The problem with delivery of messages to all mobile devices that was experienced in both Quebec and Ontario continued throughout the rest of the country.

It was reported that no alerts were received on mobile devices in Quebec and that only some mobile subscribers in Ontario received the signal.  System operators blamed the Quebec malfunction on a computer coding error and were still investigating what wernt wrong in Ontario.

Failure to receive messages was common in all provinces involved in the test on Wednesday and it appeared to be random as to what phone received the test message - not necessarily tied to whether or not a phone was connected to Wi-Fi or related to the phone's service provider.

Unlike Canada's Alert Ready system, iSIGN's SAM system is a location-based system that requires potential recipients of safety messages to personally register for messages and involves the receipt of  a security code and confirmation of the code's receipt.  This allows the location to know who has registered.  Additionally, the location is responsible for all messaging being sent, thus ensuring messages are sent on a timely basis as there is no middleman involved in the process.  Having control over all messaging allows the location the ability to test the system on a regular on-going basis.

Canada’s New Emergency Alert System Fails Test in Quebec, Problems in Ontario

As reported by the CBC (Canada Broadcasting Corporation) yesterday (click anywhere on this post to see their report) Canada's new nation-wide emergency public alert system for mobile devices failed to reach Quebec residents and also experienced problems in Ontario.  These tests were the launch of the new system that is to provide warnings of imminent safety concerns, such as tornadoes, floods, Amber Alerts or terror threats.  Tests in the rest of the country are still scheduled for this coming Wednesday.

The CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) stated that the problem occurred between emergency management in Quebec and Pelmorex Corp., the company that operates the system.

Depending on the settings, users with compatible devices were supposed to hear a tone similar to an ambulance alarm or feel a vibration for 8 seconds. While some mobile phone users reported having received an alert, others said their phone didn't emit a sound or vibrate.

Pelmorex, is working to correct the problem as soon as possible.  A representative of Quebec's Public Security Ministry stated that it is unclear whether a test will be sent again once the problem is fixed, but that if a test is to be sent the public would be notified.

Testing of Canada’s Emergency Alert System Starting Today

Click anywhere on this post to see an article on the testing of Canada's new mobile alert messages to mobile devices, which is to take place today.  Test signals are to be sent to mobile users in Quebec around mid-morning today and mid-afternoon to Ontario users (at 1:55).  The rest of the nation is to receive their test messages this Wednesday.

The signals are controlled by emergency management officials to warn the public of imminent threats, such as tornadoes, floods and fires, as well as water contamination and Amber alerts.  Depending on the service provider, the alerts could make a distinctive noise or simply buzz a device, although in some cases, users will have to acknowledge receipt of the alert before being able to resume normal function of their devices.

While similar to iSIGN's SAM system, this national alert system is not designed to send messages to specific locations such as a school or a mall. 

As stated in a prior post concerning this nation-wide system, this is a clear confirmation that alerts to mobile devices are coming.  As iSIGN gives control over the sending of SAM's security/emergency alerts to the location using SAM (ex - schools, malls, transportation facilities, etc.), we have the perfect solution to alert attendees at specific locations about emergency situations that concern those individuals in a timely manner.

Canada’s Emergency Mobile Alerts

Testing of Canada's new emergency alert system, called Alert Ready, commences Monday, May 7.  This system will advise of "imminent threats, such as tornadoes, flood and fires, as well as water contamination and Amber alerts."  Sending these alerts are the responsibility of the federal, provincial and in some cases, municipal governments.  While the Alert Ready system allows alerting authorities from the government to issue a wide range of public safety messages, broadcasters and wireless service providers are only required to distribute alerts for situations that pose an immediate threat-to-life.

This is a clear confirmation that alerts to mobile devices are coming.  As iSIGN gives control over the sending of SAM's security/emergency alerts to the location using SAM (ex - schools, malls, transportation facilities, etc.), we have the perfect solution to alert attendees at specific locations about emergency situations that concern those individuals in a timely manner.

As a longstanding IBM business partner of approximately 10 years, designated as "Software Solutions Provider to IBM Products and Solutions" iSIGN has been invited to become a participating and contributing member of IBM'S Business Partner Research INNOVATIONHUB.  This will involve a monthly exchange of information concerning innovation and development by way of interviews and newsletters to IBM customers and partners globally.

We look forward to participating with IBM's various partners and customers and sharing our SaS solutions and hardware products with IBM's global network.  This membership in IBM's INNOVATIONHUB should prove to be a valuable marketing relationship.

RMT Announces Increased Sales Launch of Smart Antennas and SAM Technology for 2018

Rich Multimedia Technologies will be installing iSIGN Smart Antennas into 6 stores of a 168 store grocery chain located in California to demonstrate our ability to deliver messaging and content to consumers.  At the chains request and in order to adequately cover in-store shopper traffic, there will be 2 Smart Antennas installed with each ATM Kiosks located in these stores.

Additionally, RMT is a lead participant in a technology show taking place in their office building over the weekend.  They will be promoting our Smart Antennas with ATM Kiosks and SAM solution to a variety of business channels to the expected 1,000 attendees.  

Also, RMT is announcing the opening of a sales office effective May 1 in Mexico City to service airport, retail and advertising clients with iSIGN products for Mexico and parts of South America.

iSIGN Ships First Mexican Shipment

The 200 Smart Antennas and ancillary items for selected Walmart stores in Mexico, as well as for transportation and ad agency customers is now shipped.  The delay in shipping was primarily due to the legal need to have iSIGN and SAM trademarks confirmed and registered prior to shipping and sale in Mexico.  Last week we received confirmation from our Mexican lawyer that the trademarks are confirmed in Mexico and can be applied for in South America.

We are now in a position to confirm with RMT the customers and specific locations for the remaining 400 of their initial 600 Smart Antenna purchase order.
